CASE STUDY – Marine Engineering and T&I Engineering for Floating Offshore Wind TLP

Challenges:

Our client contracted to deliver the design for their proprietary technology for a floating offshore wind turbine for deployment in the South China Sea. This was a significant scope and facing capability and capacity gaps in the areas of marine engineering (ballast system design, electrical, I&I), plus T&I engineering, they turned to SWAX for cost effective support in the project delivery.

Scope:

SWAX worked with the client to clearly define the scope of work and identifying the parameters affecting the performance.

SWAX performed marine systems and T&I engineering and provided volume drafting and 3D modelling.

Benefits/Business impact:

SWAX provided full project management and quality assurance as part of SWAX’s unique “Assured, Managed, Delivered” outsourced work process. SWAX responded quickly, deploying a specialist team to deliver the scope with our unique “Assured, Managed, Delivered” outsource process.

SWAX worked collaboratively with the client team to provide a cost-effective solution with optimal results. The SWAX approach ensured the client management effort in the outsource process was kept to a minimum. The client’s association with SWAX was a success.

CASE STUDY – Offshore Floating Solar Concept Development

Challenges:

Our client is developing a floating solar concept for deployment in the offshore environment. Without an in-house engineering team, the client contracted SWAX for cost-effective support in the development of the concept. SWAX had previously worked on the concept ideation and this next phase focussed on concept development and FEED level dynamic analysis and refinement of the global structural design for the offshore environment.

Scope:

SWAX worked with the client to define the scope of work. We used a workshop session to brainstorm and select the scope elements that would add best value for this phase. We assembled a specialist engineering and analysis team to deliver the scope. We used Orcaflex to perform the dynamic analysis, developing a baseline Orcaflex model and performing sensitivities on key parameters (structural stiffness, wave height, current speed, wind speed, etc.).

SWAX performed design of the primary structure and successfully proved feasibility in the offshore environment. The structural assessment included determination of the mass properties and material quantities for the selected concept, structural stiffness calculations and assessment of the structural performance in extreme offshore waves.

Benefits/Business impact:

The SWAX team provided full project management and quality assurance as part of SWAX’s unique “Assured, Managed, Delivered” outsourced work process. SWAX’s specialist hydrodynamics and structural team adapted quickly and efficiently to changing requirements identified as the design evolved.

This cost-effective approach to the design process achieved the optimum solution for the design. The client’s association with SWAX was a success.
