Lifeboat Launch Test Rig Design
Sector: Shipping
The client: Confidential, based in the UK

Challenges:
SWAX’s client contracted to perform the design of a test rig to prove the launch behaviour of a lifeboat deployment system. The test rig was needed quickly for the imminent start of the test program. Facing capacity gaps in the areas of structural design and engineering, plus risk of impact to the overall schedule, they turned to SWAX for cost effective support in the project delivery.
Scope:
The test rig needed to test the launch behaviour of the lifeboat davit system for a variety of angles of vessel heel and trim. The solution we developed consisted of a number of modular support frames assembled in different combinations to achieve the desired heel and trim for the various test scenarios. SWAX developed the engineering using ANSYS Mechanical and progressed the design to fabrication drawings.
Benefits/Business impact:
SWAX responded quickly, deploying a highly experienced specialist structural engineering team to deliver the scope with our unique “Assured, Managed, Delivered” outsource process. The SWAX approach ensured the client management effort in the outsource process was kept to a minimum and the project was completed in time to the highest quality standards. The client was able to complete the fabrication of the frame and meet its targets, beginning the tests on time.
